Fire protection for bitumen specialists from northern Germany

Our NFPA-compliant fire extinguishing system with three vertical seawater pumps ensures a reliable supply of extinguishing water!

Holzhauer Pumpen GmbH

Our customer has been producing bitumen in northern Germany for over 100 years. The site has a distillation capacity of 950,000 tons of crude oil and an annual production of up to 400,000 tons of bitumen.

Requirements

Throughout the entire production and processing process, from the raw product to the finished bitumen product ready for delivery, nothing can be left to chance when it comes to fire protection and emergency management. Fires in the extensive plant pose a considerable risk to employees, residents, emergency services and the environment and lead to high economic losses.

Our customer needed a new extinguishing water supply system that was adapted to the current normative requirements and drew water from the Kiel Canal. Due to the size of the system, official emission requirements for dust/soot and formaldehyde had to be taken into account.

Solution

Planning, design, delivery, installation and commissioning of a new turnkey fire water pumping station with control room connection. The complete electrical equipment, heating, lighting as well as coarse screen and duplex filter systems for the water supply were implemented in accordance with the applicable NFPA-20 regulations.

For winter operation, a main extinguishing water shut-off valve with fail-safe actuator is installed for the above-ground extinguishing water drying network, which also ensures the water supply independently of the mains in the event of a fire. Three vertical seawater pumps with angular gearboxes and V-12 diesel engines are used.
