Fire protection for Energieküste LNG terminal

Requirements

The LNG terminal in northern Germany is a strategically important infrastructure project for Germany’s energy supply. As part of the “Energy Coast”, the terminal is a central hub for feeding liquefied natural gas into the German supply network – and therefore an important building block for security of supply and energy independence.

The requirements for the fire protection system were as individual as the infrastructure itself. Particularly in the maritime area – on the seaward side of the terminal – all components had to withstand extreme conditions: salty air, splash water, high mechanical loads and maximum availability in an emergency. At the same time, high technical and legal requirements applied, such as the 44th BImSchV (Federal Immission Control Act), FM approval or requirements for medium-voltage supply and environmental protection.

Solution

Customized pump systems were supplied for the seaward and landside of the LNG terminal:
Seaward side (jetty)

Diesel-powered, seawater-resistant vertical turbine pump (15.5 m long)
Delivery rate: 1,222 m³/h at 14.5 bar
Largest FM-approved, electronically controlled Tier 3 diesel engine with 1,200 hp
Antifouling system against biological deposits
Central diesel supply via 6,200 liter tank designed in accordance with WHG (German Water Resources Act)

Shore side (pump houses)
2 vertical turbine pumps driven by medium-voltage generators (700 kW)
In addition: 2 diesel high-pressure pumps (pressure maintenance pumps) with pumps also installed vertically
