Stationary fire protection solution for shopping center

The aim of this project was to plan, manufacture, deliver and install a compact prefabricated pumping station ready for operation

Requirements

Shopping centers place complex demands on stationary fire protection systems. The aim of this project was to plan, manufacture, supply and install a compact prefabricated pumping station ready for operation, which ensures fully automatic extinguishing water supply in the event of an emergency. The design was carried out in accordance with the specifications of VdS guideline CEA 4001, which was specially developed for fire extinguishing systems in publicly accessible buildings with increased risk.

Solution

Holzhauer-Pumpen took on the complete engineering as well as the subsequent production, delivery and installation of the turnkey ready-to-use pumping station. The result is a fully pre-assembled plug & play system that meets all fire protection requirements on a compact footprint of just eight by three and a half meters.

Specially adapted supply and exhaust air silencers and an additional exhaust silencer were used to reduce air and exhaust noise. The heart of the system is a powerful diesel genset, which was installed with future expansions in mind so that an identical second genset can be added if required without any structural changes.

An important component of the solution is the integrated fire alarm and fault alarm control panel. The operating states of the unit, such as the position of the shut-off dampers, smoke and heat signals and flooding, are continuously monitored via sensors. Fault messages can be fed into the higher-level building management system both on site and via CAN bus interfaces.

All other supply and safety functions such as lighting, heating, electrical sub-distribution and a manual emergency operating device were integrated at the factory. The system was installed on site ready for connection – including connection to the extinguishing water network – which significantly reduced the commissioning time.

Thanks to the optimized, space-saving design, the entire technology could be installed in a very small space without interfering with the existing building structure – a tailor-made solution for inner-city infrastructure projects with high safety requirements.

Project Details

The project falls into the category of stationary extinguishing water pumping for public buildings. The prefabricated pumping station is based on the VdS CEA 4001 standard and was equipped with a sound-insulated diesel unit. It is eight meters long and 3.50 meters wide. The system is prepared for the subsequent installation of a second, identical unit. It is equipped with a fault reporting center with CAN bus communication interface, various safety sensors and a full range of electrical equipment including lighting, heating and emergency operating system. The entire installation was carried out ready for connection as a plug & play solution on a foundation plate.

This individually planned and implemented fire protection station is a perfect example of how modern extinguishing technology can be implemented efficiently and in compliance with regulations, even in cramped urban conditions.
