Fire protection for high-voltage battery production in the automotive industry
The components used are among the largest and most powerful on the market
Requirements
As part of a new building for high-voltage battery production, a high-performance and future-proof fire protection solution for sprinkler and hydrant systems was to be implemented. The planning work for the building was already well advanced at the start of the project. This meant that all technical systems had to be integrated into previously defined, statically tested installation spaces – without compromising on performance, reliability or compliance.
The requirements for the design of the prefabricated pumping stations were high. In addition to integration into the fire protection and supply concept, extensive technical and official requirements had to be met. These included complete insulation for year-round operation, design in accordance with the relevant FM and NFPA standards and a seamless connection to the central control room.
Solution
To ensure stationary fire protection, two identical prefabricated pumping stations were developed and implemented, each equipped with pumps, extensive peripherals and complete piping. The systems are 12.5 meters long and 24 meters (8×3) wide and were planned, designed and manufactured precisely to the structural conditions.
The station has a removable wall element to allow quick access for servicing. A powerful split-case pump is used inside the station. The pump is driven by a 12-cylinder diesel engine. The diesel engine complies with the limit values of the 44th BImSchV (Federal Immission Control Act) and is equipped with an electronic constant pressure control to limit the pump pressure to a maximum of 12 bar.
The entire system was designed and manufactured in accordance with FM Global Standard specifications. The system is supplemented by a DVGW (German Association for Gas and Waterworks) approved, redundant drinking water separation station in stainless steel, which is used to refill the sprinkler tank. An additional electric filling pump and a pressure maintenance pump ensure that the sprinkler system remains functional at all times.
Project Details
The project belongs to the category of stationary fire protection in industrial high-tech production facilities. The two pumping stations were designed for the new construction of the high-voltage battery production facility for our customer’s e-mobility strategy. They meet all FM and NFPA requirements. With a length of 12.5 meters and a width of 24 meters each, they are among the largest prefabricated pumping stations in the Holzhauer-Pumpen portfolio.
Special features include the powerful split-case pumps with electronic constant pressure control, the use of Tier 2-certified diesel engines, a redundantly designed drinking water separation station and a high degree of structural adaptation and prefabrication. The entire implementation was carried out under demanding logistical and scheduling conditions – a good example of solution-oriented, project-specific plant expertise in the safety-critical industrial sector.
